This morning the conservators and technicians were on the Afterlife gallery early to remove the mummy and coffin of Perenbast from display to prepare her for loan to the the Secret Egypt exhibition at the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery, Coventry (February-June 2011: http://www.theherbert.org/index.php/home/news/coming-soon-secret-egypt )
Perenbast and her coffin, an unusual predominantly black, yellow and white design, dating to the 25th Dynasty, have been on display since the mid-eighties. The coffin is far more colourful than I expected, and the designs – protective vignettes and texts – are detailed and finely done. The mask section of the lid in particular, with inlaid eyes, is very beautiful. Here are some images of Perenbast’s coffin taken this morning:
